It was an overcast and gloomy day. The two don't always go together but when they do, you keep your head down and put one foot in front of the other. So we did, taking a walk by the ancient reservoir and back home along the side of the hill.
After climbing up the side of the hill and getting to the flat part, we paused a moment and looked up. To our surprise we saw an elegant copper downspout faced with copper leaves, swirling from the gutter in a spiral designed to minimize the echo of water drips.
Who does that? we wondered.
People do. In fact, people do a lot of intriguing things around their property. They wear their hearts on their sleeves. And if you just look up for a moment, you can find yourself quite amused.
For the rest of the walk, we kept the camera resting on our shoulder and our eyes peeled for more nice touches. Small divergences from necessity into art.
Then, too, we ran across art imposing itself nevertheless on the world.
We thought of the long plane rides we have taken to be on the other side of the world looking for something we could not find at home. And we wondered if, instead, we had just walked slowly around the block with our eyes peeled, we might have found enough to keep us occupied here.
We begin the year sheltering in place still. But home is hardly a gloomy place to be, as these snapshots suggest.
