In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Travel Photographer of the Year, Town Hardware Store, Magda Biernat, Ronghui Chen, a flash clamp, Undo, snow shots, Jack Palladino and a Pocket Guides deal.
- Matt Fidler presents photos from the Travel Photographer of the Year 2020 contest. Irene Becker's shot of a house in the middle of the Drina River says it all.
- Kevin Raber visited Town Hardware Store and General Store in Black Mountain, N.C., and found it "brought back memories of spending Saturday mornings with my dad visiting the local hardware store." Fortunately he had a camera with him to capture the cap guns, jaw harps, nuts and bolts of another era. "I was happy because I was taking pictures," he writes. "It felt good to try and find a vision in a hardware store."
- Stephanie Wade presents images from Adrift, a project by Polish photographer Magda Biernat that documents how human habitation responds to and reflects harsh landscapes in the Arctic.
- In Evolution Through Exhibiting, Cat Lachowskyj interviews Ronghui Chen about the effect of exhibiting on his photography. "I want to ensure that people can see the materiality of my photos, rather than experience them as electronic images," he says.
- In The Evolution of a Flash Clamp, Joe McNally tells the story of the Justin Clamp and the latest incarnation of this ballhead on a clamp.
- Julieanne Kost discusses Undo, the History Panel, History and Art History Brushes in Photoshop. "Let's see how they can help us to make the most our of the past, present and future in Photoshop," she writes.
- Dave Williams offers two timely tips for Snow Shots. The first involves white balance and the second covers exposure. Can you guess?
- The Associated Press reportsPrivate Eye Jack Palladino Dies at 70 After San Francisco Attack. Palladino had stepped outside his San Francisco home Thursday to take photos with his new camera when a car pulled up and tried to steal the new gear. "Palladino's camera held images of the suspects, who have been arrested," the report notes.
