Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?
So we're pleased to present the 384th in our series of Saturday matinees today: Art Photography.
This four-minute clip by Bernd Trennert presents a selection of photographs that go beyond mimesis to poetry. Each image shown for five seconds, which is just long enough to read the image.
We didn't count them but there must be about 36 images to enjoy. A roll of film in the old days.
Except, just to be clear, these weren't all composed entirely in the camera. There are quite a few photo compositions based on multiple images, some of which have been heavily manipulated. And even the single shot images are heavily edited, we suspect.
But that's how you get from representational photography to art photography, of course. Perfectly legal. And, we think you'll find, quite engaging.
Trennert lists 26 artists at the end of the piece. They include Marina Kadyrova, Valiev Rienat, Alexey Lozgachev, Rafat Mamutov, Shuhrat Yakubaev, Alexander Sviridov, Martic Nenad, Evgeny Tabalykin, Kateryna Melnyk, Vika Ivanonva, Chin Boon Leng, Svetlana Selezneva, Nguyen Hai Yen, Dmitry Grishkevich, Moghimi Alireza, Harahap Alex Yungan, Nadezdha Shelest, Kristina Dugina, Alberto Gonzato, Muhammad Chilmi, Shahin Khalaji, Samanta Joyraj, Alexander Mayorov, Joanna Radwanska, Alejando Flores and Alyona Zhaak.
