In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Mars, bad girls, Kenneth Hines Jr., ethics, Rob Loud and the basics.

  • In NASA's Perseverance Rover Sends Stunning Images, the BBC has published a set of stunning images.
  • The 'Bad Girls' of Gangland L.A. is Janette Beckman's best photograph, she tells Amy Fleming. The three Rivera Bad Girls, as they called themselves, turned out all right. "One of them works for the district attorney's office. One works for the gang rehabilitation group Homeboy Industries and the other works in human resources and drives a Mercedes," she says. "But they told me that 90 percent of the people who were in my book were either in jail or had been killed."
  • Kenneth Hines Jr., the photographer behind this year's Lightroom splash page, finds Beauty in Everyday Moments. "I love the editing aspect of my process and I know a lot of people aren't aware of just how powerful Lightroom is," he says.
  • In Photographing Natural Disasters: Ideas & Ethics, Ellyn Kail asked four photojournalists about their work on the frontlines of fires, floods and hurricanes. She also links to the National Press Photographers Association code of ethics.
  • Music and commercial photographer Rob Loud suggests Maybe It's OK to Work for Free After All? Actually, that's just the headline, he admits. The "underlying idea here is building relationships," he writes.
  • Dahlia Ambrose lists nine tutorials that cover The Basics of taking photographs. Which means there should be no surprises here.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
