Matinee: 'Smash the Cake, Catarina!' Share This on LinkedIn   Tweet This   Forward This

6 March 2021

Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 386th in our series of Saturday matinees today: Smash the Cake, Catarina!.

We needed this. All 2:38 of it.

It's Catarina's first birthday and Brazilian photographer Cibele Zanardi has just the right idea to make the memories of it unforgettable. A party dress, Caterina's parents and grandmother, and a big cake covered in thick swirls of frosting. Everything pink, of course.

Caterina is irresistible. She laughs, she smiles, she claps her hands, she kisses her father, mother and grandmother.

And she gets into that cake, too.

She can't see you, of course, but you'll be smiling back all the same. You really can't help it.

Zanardi's lighting, staging (the tub at the end is perfect) and the rapport with her subject are all exemplary. The upbeat music doesn't hurt, either. It's as simple and sweet at Caterina herself.

It was just a delight to run across this.

Feliz Aniversário, Caterina! E muitos, muitos mais! Happy Birthday, Caterina! And many, many more!
