The jury in the trial of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd returned a few moments ago. Chauvin was found guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

We published this image nearly a year ago when, walking by a public middle school, we saw this plea for nothing more than justice.

We wrote, in part:

Justice demands those complicit in Floyd's death be held accountable. Justice demands that the man whose knee suffocated Floyd be tried for his murder.

Today justice was served.

It took the 20 jurors 10 and a half hours of deliberation to reach a decision on each of the three counts. The evidence was overwhelming.

That hasn't always mattered, history shows. But today it did. And justice, at last, was served.

And we are a better nation for it.
