In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Carlota Guerrero, Lea Thijs, Brad Walls, Tamary Kudita, students, feathering, Google Photos, photo planning apps, Zingst and Anton Corbijn.
- In Goddesses and Dragons, Joanna Cresswell interviews Carlota Guerrero about her new photobook Tengo un dragón dentro del corazón (I Have a Dragon in My Heart). "Women cry in her pictures, they sweat, they laugh, they gasp, they dance and this is just the way they should be," she writes.
- In Photographer Documents Her Father With Bipolar Mood Disorder, Miss Rosen presents the monochrome images Lea Thijs took of her father, which were recently published in Safe House. "Now under medication, I felt it was time for me to document my father in his home in South Africa and revisit memories associated with his childhood in Brussels," Thijs explains.
- In Pools, From Above, Brad Walls writes about his aerial photos. "After shooting my first drone photos on a trip through Southeast Asia and Australia, I began experimenting more explicitly with new techniques: my use of negative space, compositional balance, leading lines, symmetry," he writes.
- Diane Cole explains Why a Zimbabwean Photographer Asked Her Subjects to Pose in Victorian Garb. Zimbabwe-based photographer Tamary Kudita wanted to show "the impact of her country's colonial experience on African life and identity today."
- In These Young Students Learned Photography and Gained Community During the Pandemic, Michele Abercrombie looks at what 19 students from four youth photography classes around the country produced.
- Julieanne Kost continues her 3, 2, 1, Photoshop! series with Five Ways to Soften the Edge of a Selection:
- With Google Photos ending unlimited free storage today, Michale Potuck explains How to Export Google Photos to iCloud Photos. He analyzes your choices for what, outside of Amazon, is a landscape of paid online storage options.
- Dave Williams discusses a few Photo Planning Apps. Chance favors the prepared mind.
- Ilford will host What You See Is What You Get -- Zingst, a free webinar with Ilford Master Jochen Kohl and his Ilford Sprite 35-II on printing technology and the creative options Ilford offers in printing and paper. Register in advance for the June 4, 1:30 p.m. PDT webinar aimed at beginners and advanced users with an open Q&A session afterwards.
- Alexis Petridis talks to Anton Corbijn about his 40 Years Shooting Depeche Mode. Taschen has just published Depeche Mode by Anton Corbijn.
