In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the Belmont Stakes, World War II, Tank Man, the Cambo AC-380, pricing used gear, Capture One and NX Field.

  • In The Longest Ride, Melissa Hoppert presents a few historical images of the Belmont Stakes, which will be run for the 153rd time this afternoon.
  • The Lenses of German Soldiers captured Europe during World War II with Leicas and Rolleiflexes in their backpacks. All at War: Photography by German Soldiers 1939-45 includes a number of these images from the Archive of Modern Conflict in London.
  • Just for reference, here's Jeff Widener's story about his photograph of Tank Man on Tianamen Square in 1989. Also just for the record, Patrick Witty added Charlie Cole's story and a few more images of the confrontation in Behind the Scenes: Tank Man of Tiananmen. Reports earlier this week that Microsoft's Bing had censored searches for "Tank Man" resulted in the company explaining it was "due to an accidental human error and we are actively working to resolve this." Several hours later, Bing was able to find the images again. And while we're at it, we can recommend My Old Home: A Novel of Exile by Orville Schell, former dean of the Graduate School of Journalism at UC Berkeley, who was also one of the few Western journalists working in Mao Zedong's China. The last part of the novel is set in Tianamen Square during June 1989.
  • Jim Kasson likes the Cambo AC-380 Fine Ratio Geared Focus that refines the focus adjustment of the Cambo Actus. "Makes me wonder why we don't see lenses with fine and coarse focusing rings," he writes.
  • In My Used-Gear Pricing Method, Mike Johnston explains how he researches a fair price for previously owned equipment. And he lists a few For Sale Items he has made available now with special prices for readers of his blog.
  • Next Step: iPad announces Capture One is coming to the iPad in early 2022.
  • Nikon has introduced NX Field for reliable synchronized multiple remote shooting from a portable smart device with FTP file uploads of the images.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
