In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Rita Leistner, Dora Goodman, shutters and a pandemic photography follow-up.

  • Ellyn Kail features Rita Leistner's images of The Astonishing Labor of Tree Planters in Canada, of which Leistner was once one, planting 6,000 trees in a single day. “Aside from how physically hard it is simply to walk in the terrain–overgrown, steep, strewn with logs left behind, gnarled with overgrowth, pitted with giant holes, obstacles of fallen trees and stumps, etc., there are the punishing biting insects, the rain, the snow, the endless exposure to the elements,” she says.
  • In Dora Goodman Marries New Technology to Old School Camera Tradition, Chris Gampat interviews the film camera designer. "The thing I am most happy about is that thanks to the endless possibilities and flexibility of the new generation of 3D printing technology, we could create our own camera, the products that we always wished existed," she says.
  • Understanding the Difference in Global and Rolling Shutters explains why your video may look like jello when you pan quickly.
  • In Hip to Be Square, Mike Johnston gives us the back story to yesterday's discussion about pandemic photography. He recalls a remark by Mark L. Power that student complaints about photography evaporated when they got involved in a project.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
