In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the iPhone Photography Awards, Jake Michaels, Devís and Rueda, Africa in Focus and getting up in the morning.
- The Winners of the 2021 iPhone Photography Awards have been announced. Photojournalist Istvan Kerekes of Hungary won the grand prize for his image Transylvanian Shepherds. Sharan Shetty of India took Photographer of the Year for his image Bonding.
- In the new print publication C.1950, Los Angeles based-photographer Jake Michaels documents the Mennonites who live independently on their own land in Belize. "Community values lie at the heart of the Mennonites, whose agricultural society recalled for Michaels the simpler time of the American midwest in the 1950s," writes Stephanie Wade.
- Grace Ebert delivers a fresh supply of Anna Devís and Daniel Rueda. And who can't use a little of that?
- Entries for the 2021 Africa in Focus competition open on Sept. 1 September and close on Oct. 15. Winners will be announced on Nov. 15. You are invited to submit images taken anywhere in Africa. An entry fee of $25 covers up to five entries with the non-profit Children in the Wilderness is the sole beneficiary of this year's competition.
- Justin Wee's two photos accompanying It's Never Too Late to Play the Cello are warm and engaging but Vera Jiji's advice in her interview with Alix Strauss is inspiring. "You have to get up each morning and do something you loves," says the retired schoolteacher who returned to the cello upon retirement.
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
