In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the Olympics Opening Ceremony, the Bootleg Fire, old family photographs, a Reddit AMA and the Framework laptop.

  • NPR showcases the Olympics Opening Ceremony. "Despite the cloud cast by the coronavirus -- from the one-year postponement to a ban on spectators -- athletes showed their excitement finally to be at the Olympics, bouncing and bounding across the stadium floor to open the Games," the authors write.
  • Scenes From America’s Largest Wildfire features Kristina Barker's photographs from the Bootleg Fire in Oregon. "The abandoned cabins covered in a reflective flame-retardant material resemble spaceships parked in the forest," writes Sergio Olmos about the tin foil firefighters use to protect the wooden structures from embers and deflect heat.
  • In 'Rescuing' Family Photographs, Mike Johnston returns from helping clean out the ancestral home "with the floor of a 9-foot U-Haul van packed mostly with boxes of photographs."
  • Photojournalist Mike Mezeul II will subject himself to a Reddit Ask Me Anything on July 29 at 2 p.m. ET. "He has created epic images of nature's most astounding creations- from nighttime landscapes to professional sports, the destructive forces of nature, air-to-air aerial photography and more," the moderators point out.
  • The Framework Laptop, whose open design can be repaired and upgraded easily, starts at $999 with a DIY edition that starts at $749. "Our philosophy is that by making well-considered design tradeoffs and trusting customers and repair shops with the access and information they need, we can make fantastic devices that are still easy to repair," the company says.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
