In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Hugo Huerta Marin, irises, Joshua Cutillo, travel lens kits, Marla Michele Must, free portrait presets, non-camera gear and Save Your Photos Month.
- Sarah Gilbert presents the Intimate Portraits of Inspiring Creative Women by Hugo Huerta Marin, who spent seven years collecting them for his book Portrait of an Artist: Conversations With Trailblazing Creative Women. The 424-page book includes interviews and Polaroids of nearly 30 women including Marina Abramović, Cate Blanchett, Tracey Emin, Debbie Harry, Isabelle Huppert, Rei Kawakubo, Annie Lennox, Carrie Mae Weems, Yoko Ono, Miuccia Prada, FKA Twigs and Diane von Fürstenberg.
- The online exhibit Irises at the Getty shows off some collotypes at the Getty.
- Kate Stone interviews portrait photographer Joshua Cutillo who is inspired by movie posters and oil paintings. "I would describe my work as cinematic with a pinch of dramatic lighting bringing it all together nicely," he says.
- In Modern Minimal Versus Traditional Travel Lens Kits, Thom Hogan catalogs all the two-lens strategies that have been used by photographers before revealing his own preferences for a number of camera bodies.
- In The Story Behind Marla Michele Must's Romantic Senior Portrait, Dan Havlik talks to the portrait artist about photographing her neighbors on their 50th anniversary.
- The Creative Cloud blog has Free Adobe Lightroom Presets and Tips for Portrait Photography from Aundre Larrow.
- Non-Camera Gadgets That Make Your Photography Better covers the major category of non-camera equipment you need to pursue digital photography. Like a computer, external drives, monitor, printer. A sobering read not just for the newbie but anyone about to upgrade camera or gear.
- Vivid-Pix has joined the worldwide effort to preserve family memories during September’s Save Your Photos Month. The initiative offers over 40 free workshops, live Q&As with experts and weekly challenges with prizes and giveaways to help you learn how to keep photos safe and accessible from natural disasters, water damage and fading from light, heat and humidity.
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
