In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Mennonites, photo tins, portrait ideas, Rubin's Vase, an estimate, saliva and Apple's self service repair program.

  • Joe Parkin Daniels presents photojournalists Luca Zanetti's images of The Mennonites of Liviney, Colombia. "Not long ago, this region was plagued by communist insurgents and rightwing paramilitaries; now it is home to an austere community of blond-haired, blue-eyed Anabaptist Christians which traces its origins to 16th-century Friesland," he writes.
  • Kevin Raber loves Hahnemühle Paper;s Fine Art Photo Tins. "These tins come in either 4x6 or 5x8 sizes with 30 pre-cut pages of paper with rounded corners," he writes. The rounded corners are no small thing. The tins themselves have rounded corners.
  • Jasenka Grujin lists Seven Portrait Photography Ideas to try "even if you're a seasoned portraitist."
  • Rubin's Vase Optical Illusion With Harold's Profile was one portrait idea Grujin didn't think of but Harold Davis (and his wife Phyllis) did. Requires a real vase, though.
  • Craig Oppenheimer prices Lifestyle Images for a Vacation Company. Unlimited use of up to 30 images for two years worked out to $65,500. "The estimate was well received, however we heard back a few days later letting us know that they determined their budget was $50k and they asked what we could do to come down to that number," he writes. No problem.
  • The Getty's Erin Migdol explains Why We Sometimes Use Spit to Clean Paintings. Saliva has enzymes like amylase and lipase to break down grime and it's warm and slightly acidic. Very affordable in small quantities, too.
  • Apple Announces Self Service Repair starting with iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 (and Macs with M1 chips shortly after) next year. "The initial phase of the program will focus on the most commonly serviced modules, such as the iPhone display, battery and camera. The ability for additional repairs will be available later next year." One more thing for your resident IT person to do.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
