In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at monochrome boots, Curry's Afghan girl, flower power, a 1957 black Leica, iPhone long exposures and fixing an iPhone yourself.
- Kirk Tuck took his Leica SL with a Lumix S 50mm f1.8 to Downtown Austin and went monochrome. Click on an image to see a slide show format. Loved the boots, even in black and white.
- Jenny Gross reports Steve McCurry's 'Afghan Girl' From 1985 National Geographic Cover Takes Refuge in Italy. "Heather Barr, the associate director for women's rights at Human Rights Watch, said that it was a particularly dangerous time to be a high-profile woman in Afghanistan," she writes.
- In Flower Power, Grace Holiday presents Angelina Golt's best iPhone photo. "In post-production, Golt likes to "play the artist" once again," Holiday writes, "but for this image she simply deepened the colors: 'Color is also a powerful storytelling tool.'"
- Kehl Bayern reports a Leica Camera From the 1950s Sells for Millions at Auction. Well, 1.34 million. Leica only produced 412 of the Leica MP Black Paint edition cameras in 1957, so it was a rare one, too.
- In The Long Exposure Photo Trick With iPhone, Derrick Story explains how to use the Live Photos option.
- Dan Milmo answers the intriguing question, What Is It Like Trying to Fix an iPhone Yourself? It took him an hour with supervision from a couple of pros who routinely do it in 20 minutes. Lots and lots of little screws.
