In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at foxes, books, Lightroom tips, two portraits, printing, filters, the most rented products, hardware and the M1 family.
- Grace Ebert presents The Wildly Diverse Characteristics of Foxes captured by Dutch wildlife photographer Roeselien Raimond and assembled into what looks like a disturbing Zoom meeting of 64 of the creatures. "Shy and arrogant, from wallflower to cocky, chronically happy or notoriously sad. Helpful or headstrong. Mischievous and cute. Name it and you'll have a fox version of it," Raimond says. Mute 'em before they start howling.
- Sean O'Hagan lists The Best Photography Books of 2021 but they are not your usual stack of hardbacks.
- Julieanne Kost updates her 33-page Lightroom Classic Tips, Shortcuts and Quick Reference Guide for 2022. "I've tried to be as concise as possible in the PDF," she writes.
- Kirk Tuck showcases Wo Portraits, Twenty Years Apart of his friend and former colleague Anne.
- Kevin Raber introduces The PXL Print It Series with a 14-minute video, the first in a series:
- In Filtered, Dave Williams talks filters. "Filters can make a huge difference when we apply them in the right circumstances," he writes.
- LensRentals lists The Most Rented Photo and Video Products of 2021 (not just the new ones they listed last week). "Being one of the largest rental houses in the world, we think that our end-of-the-year data can show a pretty broad scope of where the industry is heading and what we can expect into next year and beyond," they note. The top 20 are all Canon or Sony with one Blackmagic breaking in at, guess where, No. 13.
- The Six Colors staff lists its 2021 Favorites: Hardware and they aren't all top-of-the-line products. Among the more unusual items are the ScanSnap ix1600 and Stream Deck.
- Howard Oakley considers the Anomalies in Base Performance of M1 Cores. "When you read in more depth at all the tricks that M1 chips and their CPUs pull, it's quite bewildering," he writes as he continues his comparisons of the Firestorm (performance, P) with Icestorm (efficiency, E) cores.
