Today marks the 77th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the German concentration camp in Poland where 1.1 million people were exterminated during World War II. The day of liberation by Soviet troops has been commemorated since 2005 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Temple Emanu-El. At Two Lake St. in San Francisco, near the Presidio.

In the room we work in every day, we have long displayed a small print of the photo above. We took that image of Temple Emanu-El in San Francisco quite some time ago, when it was not as heavily guarded as it has had to become.

It's an image of the gates, whose iron bars seem like flames. We published it on an earlier Remembrance Day, but we are reprising here to again remind us of the Holocaust survivors we have known, the suffering they and their relatives endured and the threats that haunt us even today.

We invite you to remember, along with us, each of the many victims of not just that camp but of the Holocaust itself with a moment of silent reflection that, from a distance, might be mistaken for prayer.
