In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Peter Turnley, Imogen Cunningham, Billy Dinh, Chris Mottalini, upcoming events, Kodak Gold 200, iPhone sports photography, Vivian Maier Developed and a Smart Switch.
- Mother Jones has published Peter Turnley's An Exodus From Ukraine. He took a train into Ukraine as Ukrainians were leaving. "As I walked the platform, I looked into the eyes of dozens of refugees looking out the train window, waiting to depart for a new world -- leaving behind everything they have previously known in life," he writes. And these, sadly, are the "lucky" ones.
- In How Imogen Cunningham Lived and Worked, Zoe Goldman and Estefania Valencia update their review of Imogen Cunningham: A Retrospective, on view at the Getty Center until June 12. "What stands out most, beyond the strength of her work, is her lifelong dedication to equality, not only for women but for all marginalized people," they write.
- In A TurkishStallholder's Face Emerges From the Clutter, Tim Adams writes about American photographer Billy Dinh's portrait that almost missed this man amid his junk.
- Anaïs Nin's Los Angeles Hideaway Still Keeps Her Secrets but Chris Mottalini's photographs reveal them.
- Scott Kelby lists a few Upcoming Photography Events. He'll be there, pandemic providing.
- The Phoblographer reveals What to Know About the Exciting New Kodak Gold 200 120 Format.
- In iPhone Sports Photography: Should You Even Bother?, Derrick Story finds a way. "My hit rate goes way down for sporting events, but even if I get one or two mementos from the event, I feel it's worth the effort," he writes.
- Andrew Molitor reviews 'Vivian Maier Developed' by Ann Marksl, the definitive biography with 400 of her images.
- Jason Snell had a little trouble when he tried to Power Off Accessories With a Smart Switch "because the Mac Studio uses so little power compared to a traditional computer that it dips below the power strip's threshold." He ordered a newer power strip with a switch to change the threshold to a lower level.
