In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at AP's photos of the week, best messenger bags, best photo printers and shooting fireworks.
- The Associated Press has published the Week in Pictures, which range from an injured, elderly Ukrainian woman sitting in her bombed-out yard to Paul McCartney performing onstage.
- Dan Havlik picks The Three Best Camera Messenger Bags. They're the leather (and expensive) ONA Bowery Camera Bag, more practical Think Tank Photo Retrospective 7 V2.0 and rugged Domke F-5XB. We've use variants of the last two happily for years and years.
- In an update to their older review, the Wirecutter's Erin Lodi and Amadou Diallo confirm The Best Photo Printer is still the Epson SureColor P700 followed by the slightly less expensive Canon Pixma Pro-200. That duo has persisted for a couple of generations, going back to the Epson R3000 and Canon Pro-100. One commenter repeats the advice of an IT friend, who told him, "When your printer runs out of ink, throw it away and buy a new one." Not entirely misguided that. The cost of ink is ridiculous. Which is why we keep hoping for a reasonably-price dye sub printer for prints up to 5x7.
- We codified the known solutions to Shooting Fireworks in 2015. And that's where you'll find the best advice if you need a refresher course. This year, sadly, the cost of shipping fireworks from China exceeds the cost of the fireworks themselves, forcing some localities to forego the traditional celebration.
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
