In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Thomas Rousset, Tania Shcheglova and Roman Noven, Stacy Kranitz, camera launches, the Sigma 65mm f2.0 lens and vintage lenses.
- In Fiction and Absurdity: Thomas Rousset's Exaggerated Explorations of Rural Life, Philippa Kelly explores the Rousset's amusing images captured in the village of Prabert in France, now collected in a 220-page photo book. "Twelve years ago, when I started my schooling in photography, I began with documentary, with very strict documentary," he says. "But, step by step, I began to shoot more fiction, more absurdity." The village was in on the game.
- In Impossible Installations, Joanna Cresswell interviews Tania Shcheglova and Roman Noven about their collaboration using artificial intelligence. "After meeting as strangers on a Web site for photography, they soon found they had mutual ground in tastes and ideas and over the next few years they developed a unique and fantastical visual universe between them," she writes.
- In Remarkable Photos Show What Harm Reduction Actually Looks Like, Taylor Sisk accompanies photographer Stacy Kranitz to Central Appalachia "to document three different efforts -- a nonprofit health fair, a medical clinic, and a scrappy DIY project -- to save lives and change minds."
- Thom Hogan asks, Do Camera Launches Change Anything? Well, user angst but "you should probably upgrade no faster than every other cycle to maximize your capability vs. price over time," he writes.
- Kirk Tuck takes his Sigma Sigma 65mm f2.0 Lens to the museum and beyond (after a coffee and a scone, which he describes as "geriatric coffee drinker meets benevolent barista").
- Light Stalking lists Seven Best Vintage Lenses for Capturing Dream-Like Portraits. "One thing to keep in mind is that new isn't always better, and sometimes the only way to recreate that vintage feel from the past is to dust off a vintage lens and take it out for a spin."
While many Black Friday deals are already live, we'll publish our comprehensive list after Thanksgiving, as usual. Meanwhile more to come! Meanwhile, here's a look five years back. And please support our efforts...
