In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Environmental Photographer of the Year, a gift, the Canon R6 Mark II, family photoshoot ideas, a gear survey, AI-made avatars, tracking swap space, a large leaf, Viva Magenta and two opportunities.
- Matt Fidler showcases winning entries from the Environmental Photographer of the Year competition, "an international platform to raise awareness for the issues that threaten our planet." Not your usual environmental photographs, starting with the glow of a vertical farm growing vegetables.
- Harold Davis returns Home with a gift from Orvieto for his wife Phyllis. He photographed it with lemons from their tree.
- Scott Kelby announces My New Camera Is Here!!!! It's the Canon R6 Mark II. He sold his R6 to B&H before upgrading to the Mark II.
- Jasenka Grujin list a wealth of Family Photoshoot Ideas "because everyone needs memorable, affectionate photos that will be a joy to look at many years and decades later."
- In We Asked 1,000 Photographers What Camera They Use, Shotkit reports the results of its survey. "We also looked at whether photographers are using dSLRs or mirrorless cameras and the reasons for their choice. What we uncovered surprised us and today I'm going to share our findings with you."
- In AI-Made Avatars for LinkedIn, Tinder and More, Adobe's John Nack highlights PhotoAI's $19 service that mines your selfies to generate fake photos appropriate to the platform. Suits for Linkedin, tats for Tinder.
- Howard Oakley illuminates Tracking Swap Space to see if it's wearing out your SSD prematurely. He also covers minimum SSD requirements for M1/M2 Macs and explains some confusion numbers for RAM use vs. swap use.
- In Getty's Best Free Souvenir, Meg Butler suggest taking one of the museum's enormous Yarwood leaves. "If you spot one before winter takes hold, take a photo and share it with us on Getty's Instagram or email us at stories@getty.edu," she writes.
- Pantone has announced Viva Magenta (18-1750 on your swatch) as Color of the Year 2023. It follows last year's "inquisitive and intriguing" Peari "with vim and vigor" while being "powerful and empowering," the company said. (To think some people make fun of wine label descriptions.)
- Colossal mentions two December 2022 Opportunities for photographers.
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
