In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Frank Thorp V, the Comedy Wildlife Contest, beautiful Christmas cribs, Evgeny Maloletka, Harold Davis, Mike Peters, one camera, new products and a go-to sentence.

  • Faces of the Investigation features Frank Thorp V's large format black-and-white portraits of key figures in the Jan. 6 committee's proceedings along with interviews by Sarah Mimms.
  • Winners of the Comedy Wildlife Contest are led by overall winner Jennifer Hadley for her photo Not so cat-like reflexes. You can also see all the finalists in the competition.
  • Rome's Most Beautiful Christmas Cribs includes the 2022 edition of the 100 Presepi exhibition in St. Peter's Square and continues to the Roman Forum on to one created by Rome’s rubbish collection company.
  • Ukraine's Evgeny Maloletka has been chosen by the Guardian picture desk as its agency photographer of the year. He discusses covering the conflict in his country for the Associated Press alongside a selection of his best work.
  • Harold Davis presents his Best of 2022, an ongoing series started in 2013 in which he showcases his favorite personal images for the current year.
  • Mike Johnston has an extended conversation with photographer Mike Peters after asking is photography has lost its "status and prestige."
  • If I Could Only Have One Camera Which One Would It Be? Kirk Tuck wonders. Guesses will be futile. "It was a remarkably perfect camera and the five big prints hanging in our kitchen, dining room and living room all came from images taken with that camera on black and white film," he writes. The mid-1990s Mamiya 6 film camera.
  • The LensRentals staff picks The Best New Photo and Video Products of 2022.
  • A Reddit photographer asks, Go-To Sentence to make people smile during a shoot. Quite a few ice breakers to put in your bag. ("Say cheese!" didn't make it.)

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
