In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Lunar New Year, Thatcher's Children, Street View, the Masks panel, Cosina, vintage fast lenses, Pre-Photoshop, night shooting and a jammed hot shoe.

  • Alan Taylor presents 25 photos of the 2023 Lunar New Year Celebrations. "People around the world ushered in the new year with displays of fireworks, family get-togethers, temple visits and street festivals," he writes. It's the Year of the Rabbit.
  • In What Happened to Thatcher's Children?, Mee-Lai Stone details Craig Easton's images of two generations of the Williams family in northern England as their lives descend from loving family life to a "vicious poverty trap."
  • Grace Ebert features the Wonders of Street View curated by Neal Agarwal, who "showcases photographs of offbeat landmarks, digital glitches, chance encounters and people who prepare to pose for the famous camera-laden Google Street View cars as they drive by."
  • Julienne Kosts shows How to Stop the Masks Panel From Automatically Hiding in Lightroom Classic. You'll need v12.1 to do it. "Prior to this update, on mouse-down Lightroom Classic would automatically hide the Masks panel, revealing it again upon the release of the mouse," she writes. You can now disable that behavior.
  • Thom Hogan, back at the keyboard after successful cataract surgery, posts a Cosina Production Note. "Cosina doesn't tend to keep lenses in production indefinitely," he writes.
  • In Fast Lenses From the '70s, '80s and '90s, Kirk Tuck writes, "Almost every well made 50mm f1.4 MF lens from Nikon, Canon, Zeiss and Leica is capable of very good performance when used wide open." But you have to know how to focus manually.
  • Dave Williams got into a discussion of photo manipulation Pre-Photoshop. You know, stuff like dodging and burning. "To an extent, all images are altered in some way," he writes. Even in the camera.
  • Jason Row covers How to Capture Powerful Images at Night in a comprehensive piece that goes beyond taking a photos of lit-up buildings. "We can shoot trails of car lights, stars and their trails, moonlit landscapes and many more types of stunning images," he writes.
  • In Transmitter Stuck in Hot Shoe, a Reddit poster can't free the hot shoe on his Nikon Z. Nor can a camera repair shot. Two suggestions, one non-destructive of the transmitter, but the point is that hot shoe's do not have a standard depth. Never force anything in. The shoe (particularly a Nikon shoe) may be too shallow for the accessory.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
