In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Europe's ski resorts, Minimalist Photography Awards, Mariachi musicians, editing via text, Shutterstock's AI option, Thunderbolt hub performance, copyright bots and a backup system mistake.

  • In The Warming of Europe's Ski Resorts, Matt Fidler compares satellite images from this year's warm winter to those of last winter.
  • Minimalist Photography Awards have been announced. There are 12 categories to explore.
  • Suzanne Sease feature backstage portraits of high school Mariachi Musicians by John Dyer. "They wear Charro-inspired uniforms," he writes. "Men in beautifully embroidered pants with rows of buttons down the outside of their legs, a short, waist length jacket also embroidered, a white shirt and colorful silk ties. The young women wear the same uniform except they wear long fitted skirts that fall to their boot tops."
  • Adobe's John Nack gives Editing via Text a shot. It put a mustache on his face but gave him a rude Mohawk.
  • Lauren Leffer reports Shutterstock Has Launched Its Generative AI Image Tool "offering its customers the option to generate their own AI images." The alternative to stock photography is now in beta but available to all paying Shutterstock users. "If a generated image includes a recognizable bit of trademarked material or spits out celebrity's likeness -- it's on the user of Shutterstock's tool to notice and avoid republishing the problem content," she notes.
  • Do Thunderbolt Hubs Impair Performance? Howard Oakley tests two external SSDs connected directly to Mac USB-C ports and connected to a USB-C hub. "If you don't need the additional ports, it's better to connect Thunderbolt devices directly when you can," he writes.
  • In Lost My Photography Business Instagram Account, a company bot looking for knock-offs apparently nailed a photographer who used its products in a shoot for a copyright violation. "Everything gone in an instant because a company believes they should be the copyright owner simply because the images contain their products," the Reddit poster writes. It's an increasingly common phenomenon.
  • Katherine Doherty reports NYSE Mayhem Traced to a Staffer Who Left a Backup System Running. She quotes a source that "the turmoil resulted because the backup system in Cermak was left running. That misled the exchange's computers to treat the 9:30 a.m. opening bell as a continuation of trading and so they skipped the day's opening auctions that neatly set initial prices." On a happier note, our Disaster Recovery has ended on a positive note. After making two small Unix-related edits, we've recovered complete functionality and done our first Time Machine backup on the system.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
