Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 487th in our series of Saturday matinees today: The Hidden Paradise.

The Hidden Paradise is the name of Jürg Kaufmann's exhibit of photographs of the Engadin Mountains in Switzerland. This 3:04 video showcases his stills of the beauty of this mountain range "from the towering peaks of Piz Palu to the glaciers of Piz Bernina and the impressive Badile North face."

In a blog entry titled The White Magic Is Wearing Thin posted last month, Kaufmann wrote about his most recent visit to the Engadin Mountains:

Until now, the white snow has been able to hide the effects of climate change in the Alps, but not this winter. Last week I was back in the high altitudes of the Engadine mountains to take some recent photos and what I saw was quite alarming.

There is little snow and even at 3,000 and 4,000 meters above sea level it is very limited. The fresh snow is the source of new ice and thus feeds the glaciers. After the hot summer of last year, a thick snow cover would be the best thing that could happen, unfortunately this fresh snow is missing so far in the current winter.

I have been visiting these mountains for many years and have seen the effects of climate change first hand. Warmer temperatures caused by climate change are causing the snow to melt earlier in the year, giving the glaciers less time to form new ice. The result is that glaciers will continue to lose volume and continue to shrink.

Kaufmann is currently developing a long-term glacier photo project with Swiss enterprises to support science and raise awareness about the impact of climate change on these precious natural resources.

The exhibition takes place in the main tent of the Snow Polo Tournament and then at the White Turf in St. Moritz on Sundays this month through Feb. 19.
