When you don't know whether you're coming or going, it's nice to have a dual purpose word to hurl into the void. "Ciao" works well for that, both coming and going.

We thought this wiper attachment was the ideal physical equivalent. Turn on the rear window wiper (assuming you have one) and it waves. If you're going forward it waves goodbye. If you are in reverse it waves hello.
But it's even better than that, we thought after a little reflection.
If you're stuck somewhere with the wiper going it mechanically cries out, "Help!"
