In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the Leica Women Foto Project, What We See, Wesaam Al-Badry, The New Big 5, LensCulture and a Miops deal.

  • The Leica Women Foto Project honors Mary F. Calvert, Eli Farinango, Anna Filipova and Greta Rico this year. The award aims to strengthen the position of and give voice to women in the photography industry. The Leica blog profiles each winner to celebrate International Women's Day.
  • The Guardian present a few images from What We See, the inaugural book by the nonprofit group Women Photograph, that features 100 images spanning 50 years on conflict, resistance, family or friendship published in the belief that "until we have balanced, representative reporting, the camera cannot offer a mirror to our global society."
  • In An Iraqi-American Photojournalist's Take on Refugees, Wesaam Al-Badry talks about how the Gulf War influenced how he photographs. "Seeing yourself as beautiful, it can start the healing process," he says.
  • Kate Mothes feature seleccted images from The New Big 5 by photographer Graeme Green. The New Big 5 is the culmination of a three-year project "celebrating the remarkable multiplicity of Earth's inhabitants, which also aims to raise awareness of the fragility of their existence as their habitats are increasingly threatened due to the climate crisis," she writes.
  • Celebrating International Women's Day links to 24 of LensCulture's most popular articles and interviews about "the women who inspire us daily" published in the past year.
  • Miops is offering its Flex Bolt trigger with lightning detection for $80 (regularly $179). The hot-shoe mounted device is controlled by your smartphone.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
