Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?
So we're pleased to present the 491st in our series of Saturday matinees today: The Paddy Irishman Project.
'Tis mere days away from St. Patrick's Day and its parades and rivers of green beer. So we jumped like a leprechaun at the chance to show you the Paddy Irishman Project photographed by Ross "Rosco" O'Callaghan, who also happens to be a television and film cinematographer.
Two years ago, he tells us, they put out the call throughout Ireland for people named Paddy. In the first week 500 of them responded to the invitation to have their portrait taken as part of a large-scale photo exhibit.
The project at the moment consists of the first 50 of those portraits accompanied by audio recordings in which each Paddy talks about his life and modern Ireland.
The project will be shown this week in New York City with a one-day free exhibit on Mar. 14 and a free outdoor public exhbiition from Mar. 15 to 22.
O'Callaghan narrates the 1:54 video, sharing the screen with stills of a few of the remarkable men he photographed.
"There's no such thing as a typical Paddy," O'Callaghan says. And he has the pictures to prove it.
