15 March 2023

Walking by this gathering of traffic cones, we couldn't suppress a smile. They looked like a public utility crew in search of a 311 call. Or a meeting of executives with no agenda.

But then we wondered if they were not more like sand bags, set out for the public to take home at no charge to increase safety and protect the welfare of the populace.

We were in no position to find out by hauling one home. We had our hands full with camera gear. And rain was threatening. Which is probably the real reason they were standing out there. Flooding was probably imminent.

Yet the idea of a Free Cone Day has an undeniable appeal. And we're glad to find out it isn't entirely mythic.

In fact, Molly Hetherwick reports that April 3 will, in fact, be Free Cone Day around the world.

The best part is that you don't have to haul an orange traffic cone home. You can get a free single scoop of Ben & Jerry's ice cream in a cup or a cone. And you can get in line as many times as you want.

In San Francisco, you can indulge at the Scoop Shops on Haight St., Fisherman's Wharf at Pier 41 and at Argonaut.

Now picture that.
