In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Mary Quant, pond hockey, going manual, Rojasianthe Superba and wireless flash triggers.
- Sarah Gilbert celebrates the life of Dame Mary Quant, 1960s Fashion Queen in pictures. Quant, who designed the miniskirt, died at the age of 93 today.
- Suzanne Sease features Shaun Fenn's personal project shooting Pond Hockey in Minnesota. "This is these people's passion: they do it at odd times of day or night, when it's 15 below out, drinking their Hamm's or Busch beers with their babies bundled up, rolling around on the ice, having a ball," he says.
- Kirk Tuck sets up his camera with Brand and Model Neutral Ideas. You know, like leaving the camera set to a low ISO, 1/250 second and f8.0 in manual mode on sunny day. "I walked. I photographed. I looked at distant objects," he writes. And he comes back with a slide show of perfect exposures.
- Harold Davis puts some Rojasianthe Superba on his light box. "Currently, only San Francisco Botanical Garden and UC Berkeley grow this amazing specimen outside of its native habitat," he writes, after getting a cutting in San Francisco, thanks to the Botanical Garden.
- Zach Sutton has been Finding the Best Wireless Flash Triggers. "So what's the verdict?" he writes. "Well, there isn't a clear winner here."
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
