One of the things we learned when we had to reinstall Monterey recently was just how useful Migration Assistant (not to mention Time Machine) can be. It ran overnight but in the morning we had full functionality restored.

So we're not planning to do a clean install of our software when we bring home the M2 later this week. We're planning to use Migration Assistant with the latest Time Machine backup.

But after 13 years, our Intel MacBook Pro resembles a software archeological site. So we decided to spend some time culling the old stuff that won't run any more.

To find it, we used About This Mac on the Apple menu and asked for a System Report. Under Software, we selected Applications and let it compile a list.

In a pane on top, each application is listed along with its Kind, which is Intel, Universal, Apple, 32-bit (Unspported) or Apple Silicon. You can sort on Kind.

In the pane below that are the details. You can select all the 32-bit applications in the top pane and then select the report in the bottom pane and paste it into a text file. Which is what we did.

The detail report includes the Location of each application. So we knew where to find it.

Because 32-bit uninstallers won't run, we used App Cleaner to make quick work of deleting the 32-bit applications in our Applications folder. There are quite a few applications in the Library folder as well, so we'll tackle those next.

We didn't remove one 32-bit application, though: Welcome to Snow Leopard.app. How could we?
