In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the 1967 Newark Riots, marine life, the Paris Metro, histograms and Lynn Goldsmith.

  • Pictures of The 1967 Newark Riots from a new book by Life photographer Bud Lee document the five-day-long riot sparked by the arrest and beating of a cab driver in which 26 people were killed by police gunfire and thousands were arrested.
  • In Looks Fishy, Kate Mothes features the underwater portraits of marine life by Andrey Savin, who was a finalist for the 2022 Close-Up Photographer of the Year contest.
  • Kirk Tuck's 1986 image Wooden Slats in the Paris Metro is the kind of work he wants to do now. "My feeling was (and is) that the business of photography had changed so profoundly; at least the way I had always practiced it, that it was no longer 'what I signed up for.'" He has come to prefer, "Wandering through life with fun cameras and snapping whatever resonates with me in the moment."
  • Jim Kasson continues his series on Histograms with two new articles, one on low contrast scenes and one on normal contrast scenes.
  • In a 7-2 ruling authored by Sonia Sotomayor, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling that Andy Warhol's paintings in the Orange Prince series based on Lynn Goldsmith's 1981 photo were not immune from her copyright infringement lawsuit. "Warhol created 14 silkscreens and two pencil illustrations based on the photo Goldsmith had taken of Prince for Newsweek magazine in 1981, most of which were not authorized by the photographer," the story notes.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
