We stumbled across the gem on a recent walk around Edgehill Mountain. It had just been washed and the 1974 Datsun 260Z gleamed in the morning sunlight. We couldn't go by without taking a few snapshots.

Datsun was what Nissan was called in the 1970s when the 260Z hit the road. It was an upgrade to the 240Z the company had been selling with a 2.6 liter engine replacing the 2.4 of the 240Z. Its 165 horses were harnessed to just 139 in the U.S. and production was discontinued in after one year here despite 53,451 sales.

It was followed by the 28-liter 280Z which sold 237,00 units through 1980, making it the most popular version of the car.

Here's a 25-minute video of the same car getting a pressure wash after 22 years:

We were only able to see three sides of the vehicle but we enjoyed every split second.

It brought back a memory of a friend who had one in her youth. When we sent her a photo of this one, she wrote back:

Mine was a 1974 260Z in what I called copper color. I wanted a British sport car like a Triumph or MG but my father was not onboard. So this was the next best thing. It was a great car.

The Triumph would have overheated even in the fog. And the MG would not not have kept the rain out of the cockpit. Sometimes father knows best.
