Matinee: 'Bay to Breakers' Share This on LinkedIn   Tweet This   Forward This

20 May 2023

Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 501st in our series of Saturday matinees today: Bay to Breakers 2019.

This 1:42 video produced by the San Francisco Chronicle captures the spirit of "the oldest consecutively run race in San Francisco since 1912." The 12K Bay to Breakers will be run again this Sunday.

Calling it a "race" is probably a euphemism. It's more of a party that moves from the bay to the ocean and takes as long as it takes with energy drinks that have not been fully vetted in blind studies.

Oh, and clothing is optional. But the costumes are to die for.

This may disturb certain Floridians but generally speaking the unclothed and wildly dressed alike are not on Social Security here. Given the duration of the "run" (and participants do traverse the city), this annual spring rite is not for the arthritic among us.

But it is for everyone who can manage to move for 12K. Uphill and downhill.

We really don't care which Kenyan wins the BMW this year (or whoever and whatever). We just love to see the sun shine and the fog intrude and the spirit move.

As we lay in bed on Sunday morning watching them on TV.
