Every now and then we get this reptilian urge to move. Just lift one leg and step forward before lifting the other. And getting on with it.

So we did. One foot in front of the other without thinking about it. Until we crested the hill and looked out over the city and thought we should pull our D200 out of its case and see if there wasn't a photograph hiding somewhere.

They are easy to miss, after all.

You have to get from here to there or there to here when you're on the move. You are only looking at street signs or traffic signals or the apparition of pedestrians and the fleeting sight of speeding vehicles. You do not pause to process what your eyes are taking in.

It's a form of self censorship. You are only looking for trouble. Not for beauty.

To see beauty you have to stop moving.

You have to look.

You have to think about it a minute. What about that array of rooftops is so interesting? Nothing at first, then you notice the historical variety of roofs and the modern solar panels obscuring them. A metaphor for our age.

Our slide show runs a little too fast to appreciate the nuances of most of these shots, but you can slow it down.

We slowed down. We took it all in. And then we turned around and walked home. Slow as a reptile.
