If the pandemic has taught photographers anything, it's to find the beauty in the close-at-hand. You don't have to hike into Yosemite or slip through the Parisian rain to find unforgettable images. You just have to take a walk around the block.

You might think this requires the acquisition of significant powers of observation but not really. The world draws attention to itself. Nothing ever really quite stays the same.

It's those changes that you notice as you walk down a street for the hundredth time. Some stump framed by untrimmed spring growth. A newly fallen tree trunk providing a comic backdrop to a getaway motorcycle.

Of course there are the things that have been there a while that you didn't notice, too.

The fire hydrant in front of the fire station. The colorful vase half hidden at the top of some stairs.

And a few things you've always admired but never taken a photo of. Like the water jug in a front yard catching the afternoon light or the marvelous windy brick back that, for 20 years, has never sprouted a weed or shifted out of level.

Try as you might, you will never get tired of reviewing these ordinary sights. Like Half Dome or Sacré-Cœur, they exercise their magic to enchant us with an unfamiliar pose.

That redefines the world we know.
