On June 19, 1865, Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3 in Galveston, Texas, announcing that in accordance with the Emancipation Proclamation, "all slaves are free." He and his Union troops had arrived to enforce the law.

General Order No. 3.. Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger, June 19, 1865.

Where is that man now when we could use him?

Immigrants are the new slaves, working for a pittance under the radar for fear of deportation. And we are not just talking about adults any more. Child labor laws are eroding across the country.

As President Biden noted today in his Proclamation on Juneteenth:

As we observe Juneteenth, we remind ourselves of the sacred proposition rooted in Scripture and enshrined in our Declaration of Independence: that we are all created equal in the image of God and each of us deserves to be treated equally throughout our lives. That is the promise of America that every generation is charged to keep alive. While the opposition may seem fierce and the fire of conflict may be intense, the story of Juneteenth reveals that freedom, justice and equality will always prevail.

Every once in a while we get a decent human being in the Oval Office. Like Biden, they seem to know what matters. And it's never themselves.

It's that in this country, all slaves are free.
