Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?
So we're pleased to present the 507th in our series of Saturday matinees today: Eyes of Hawaii Library Exhibit.
This 8:14 video by Lance Wong presents images exhibited by the Eyes of Hawaii Photography Club last month at the Hawaii State Public Library. The exhibit ran from June 6 to June 30.
Eyes of Hawaii (what a great name for a photo club, BTW) was established in 2001 by the photography students at Kaimuki Community School for Adults. As a registered non-profit corporation, the club also provides photographic support to community service and educational organizations.
The club, which meets monthly on the fourth Monday from January through November, costs $30 to join with annual dues of $24.
If we were put off by the vertical video that starts the clip, we were won back by the music. It starts off with Iam Tongi's Cool Down and continues with Wang Junqi's I Like You So Much, followed by Valerie Pola's Can You Feel the Love Tonight and Mina Okabe's Every Second. Upbeat, positive stuff, which seems to express the prevailing sentiments of club members.
The vertical video just documents the exhibition. The rest of the video displays the stills that were part of the exhibition. And there are some gorgeous images. Many are of Hawaii, which isn't too shabby itself, but there are many others from other spots on the planet, proving members take their camera when they travel.
The Eyes of Hawaii see everything, after all.
