Walking back from Laguna Honda Reservoir last week, we came across this colorful display.
The hillside behind the chain link fence is unkempt or, as we say around here, "native grasslands." The fence itself is the cheapest way to prevent people from wandering off the sidewalk onto the grasses and consequently breaking a leg and suing the city for negligence.
At first glance, perhaps, it's a study in urban blight.
But we'd seen it on the way over to the reservoir and, charmed by the audacity of the arrangement, made sure to end our excursion with a few shots of this spray of bouquets.
In fact, we are kind of hoping the flowers will keep blooming until they obscure the chain link fence, making of it something of an urban trellis. There is already a field of these beauties behind the ones poking out.
Meanwhile, we worked over this particular composition, the only horizontal we took. We used Camera Raw's Color Mixer panel to darken the yellows, greens and oranges. That brought out the flowers and the fence. Or, you might say, minimized the native grasslands.
We also trimmed the crop to a 5:3 aspect ratio, avoiding some distractions along the edge.
Despite evidence to the contrary, it seems, there is still beauty in the world. And it will not be suppressed.
