In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Israeli protests, the Women's World Cup, Gregory Crewdson, Harold Davis, layer masks, starting a blog, one day projects, Z 8 camera straps and Glenn Usdin.
- The Guardian reports Thousands in Israel Protest Against Netanyahu's Judicial Overhaul in pictures as doctors announced a nationwide strike.
- The Associate Press curates photos from the Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
- An Exhausted Dream features the Gregory Crewdson's portraits of middle America influenced by the paintings of Edward Hopper and the film Vertigo. They deftly jump from color to black-and-white, maintaining the same atmosphere.
- His composition Pretty in Pink was inspired by Barbie, the movie, Harold Davis explains.
- Julieanne Kost shares 10 tips for Working With Layer Masks in Photoshop:
- Dave Williams discusses starting Your Photography Blog as a way to have "complete creative control" over your social media.
- In Photography Project in One Day, Jason Row presents a couple of case studies to show why creating a project does not required a lot of preplanning.
- In What's With Z 8 Camera Straps? Thom Hogan reports, "I've received four confirmed reports of strap lugs failing on the Z8." It's not a new design, he notes. "I suspect Nikon is trying to figure out whether or not the problem relates to a particular batch of bodies or all bodies before saying anything," he writes.
- They Saved New York is a testimonial to the men and women of the New York Fire Department with images by Glenn Usdin and text by Dan Potter. A portion of the proceeds from the book will support four foundations that serve the needs of retired and current firefighters.
