In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Environmental Photographer of the Year, Abelardo Morell, Harold Davis, Lys Arango, Foveon crunchiness and white borders.

  • Winners of the Environmental Photographer of the Year have been announced. The award celebrates "humanity's ability to survive and innovate and showcases thought-provoking images that call attention to our impact and inspire us to live sustainably.'
  • Rebecca Horne reviews Abelardo Morell's exhibit New Ground at Edwynn Houk gallery in New York. Morell captured the French landscapes of Giverny and Arles with his tent camera which uses a periscope-like device to project the image outside onto the ground under the light-tight tent containing it.
  • In Tree Shadow, Harold Davis writes, "Glancing over my shoulder, I saw the sun hitting the side of an old tree for an instant, with shadows from foliage projected on the ancient trunk." He took the picture "and the sunlight was gone."
  • The River Ran Black showcases Lys Arango's photographic narrative of the San Nicolás mine in Spain, capturing "the essence of a pivotal juncture in time -- the fading of a profession, a way of life, and the transformation of an entire region."
  • Jim Kasson wonders, Where Does the Foveon Crunchiness Come From? "I think aliasing is a component, but postproduction also plays a role," he writes.
  • A Reddit poster asks, Why White Borders Around Photos? And gets 74 (and counting) answers.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look five years back. And please support our efforts...
