In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at show birds, the Nikon Zf, Foveon Merrill color accuracy, the Godox Lux Senior Retro flash, adaptive photography equipment, trust, finding big birds and Datacolor.
- Personality Is in the Plumage in Luke Stephenson's portraits of show birds. Kate Mothes shares a few of them from his new book An Incomplete Dictionary of Show Birds, which includes all of the images in the first volume plus 115 new portraits.
- Thom Hogan has published hisNikon Zf Review while listing a few Zf Accessories.
- In Foveon Merrill Color Accuracy, Jim Kasson reveals a workaround "to tame the excessive sharpening that Sigma Photo Pro introduces to images from the Merrill cameras."
- Derrick Story reviews the $119 Godox Lux Senior Retro Camera Flash, which evenly illuminates an entire scene and works with nearly any camera. In the same podcast, he confesses he didn't need to spend $4,000 on an M3 MacBook Pro because his $2,700 M1 MacBook Pro is almost as fast. He's only saving "a few extra minutes a few times a week," he writes.
- A disabled photographer on Reddit asks for advice about Adaptive Photography Equipment.
- In The Value of Trust in Photography, Paul Melcher distinguishes between images made with light and "datagraphy," images made with data (as with generative AI). "As we experience its displacement with the advent of datagraphy, the relationship between photography and trust -- and truth -- is being seriously challenged, if not eclipsed," he writes. The solution is simple, he continues. "We do not need immutable images; we need an immutable certificate of authenticity." Like thst being developed by Content Credentials.
- In The Big Birds Are Back! Maryann Jones Thompson reveals where to see migrating cranes, geese and swans in California.
- Datacolor is taking $10 to $20 off its products with a Holiday Savings sale through Dec. 16. "And since it is the season of giving, you'll also get a free gift with the purchase of any of the promo items," the company said.
