In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at New Year celebrations, the Dancing Bears Festival, Mehrdad Mirzaie, Lee Friedlander, the Voigtlander 75mm, Derrick Story, Hogan's predictions and family photography.

  • The Guardian presents a selection of images of New Year Celebrations around the world. There are fireworks, yes, but also candles and burning whisky barrels.
  • Associate Press photographer Andreea Alexandru took portraits of the people who dressed in bearskins for the Dancing Bears Festival, an annual event that grew out of a millennia-old tradition in the Moldavia region.
  • In Imago, Magali Duzant explores the work of Iranian-born, U.S.-based artist Mehrdad Mirzaie who uses alternative photographic processes to reinterpret archival images. "These processes offer me the opportunity to create a version of archival images while simultaneously allowing me to infuse my personal perspective by introducing alterations to these images," Mirzaie says.
  • In From the Lens of Lee Friedlander, Real Estate Focusing on the Real (gift link), Anna Kodé interviews the photographer about Real Estate, his new photo book spanning over 60 years of work with 155 photos. "In a Friedlander picture, the houses have personalities. The buildings look like they've been caught in the act of doing something embarrassing," writes Peter Kayafas, the director of Eakins Press Foundation, in the book's afterword.
  • Kirk Tuck is back in the saddle, testing his Voigtlander 75mm f1.9 MC Lens.
  • Derrick Story found himself All Dressed Up With Nowhere to Go when a storm came in. But he waited it out and found a place to go. Chase Center for a Warriors game.
  • Thom Hogan offers four 'Out There' Predictions before concluding, "The economy seems to be high tide, particularly as far as disposable income for hobby purchases like cameras, lenses and and software."
  • Jim Kasson did some Family Photography with the Hasselblad X2D/XCD90V and the Fujifilm GFX 100 II/GF110. "The experiences were completely different and necessitated different techniques," he writes. "But the next time I'm in this situation, I'll pick up the GFX in preference to the X2D."

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
