In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Kashmir, Yuanbo Chen, Sage Sohier, wide angle lenses, a box, HDR and cleaning battery corrosion.
- Dar Yasin documents the hardships of Idyllic Kashmir's 'Great Winter', "the harshest 40 days of cold in disputed Kashmir that commence in late December and extend into January and early February."
- Ion Whispers, Magali Duzant showcases portraits from Yuanbo Chen's series documenting Chinese citizens abroad who tried to return to China during the pandemic with great difficulty. "I began to photograph these people along with their meaningful objects and interviewed each person to know how these rules impacted their thoughts and experiences," he says.
- Tim Adams focuses on one image from Sage Sohier's book Passing Time, which collects her 1980s images from a "pre-digital, largely un-air-conditioned era, when people fled the heat of their houses to hang out in their yards and on the street." The $75 title will be released Jan. 15.
- Kirk Tuck has been Getting Comfortable With 28mm Lenses. That would be a Carl Zeiss ZM 35mm and a 28mm Biogon f2.8. Slide show included.
- In What I Bought With My $200, Mike Johnston mentions his plan "to offer four black-and-white images this year as fine prints." So he used his B&H gift certificate to buy a 17x22-inch archival museum case.
- In HDR -- Garish Throwback or Powerful Tool?, Jason Row remembers how editing high dynamic range photography was often extreme but still useful for bringing out the best in Raw files.
- Chris Gampat details How to Clean Battery Corrosion From a Vintage Camera. Just swab it away with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab. He also uses a little vinegar dipped in baking soda for stubborn corrosion.
