In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Portrait of Britain winners, Mathieu Bitton, Hard Pack Magazine, Cityscapes continued, color film, dark EVFs and Francis Chung.

  • Mee-Lai Stone presents the winners of the Portrait of Britain contest from Ukrainian refugees and wheelchair advocates to transgender relationships and a fairground worker.
  • In Paris Blues, Mathieu Bitton talks about his monochrome images of the French capital, collaborating with celebrities and the bond between music and photography.
  • Heidi Volpe interviews Zach Seely about Hard Pack Magazine, a print magazine featuring photographs of skiing. "I started Hard Pack to publish new voices whom you would not find in other ski and outdoor publications," he says.
  • Harvey Stearn continues his series Cityscapes with Coastal and River Cities, the second of six parts. "Waterways are also associated with travel to far-off places, which can inject notes of intrigue and romance into an otherwise static, overly detailed image," he writes. "Invariably, reflections of forms and color enhance such scenes, while side effects like fog and spray can add drama."
  • Mike Johnston wonders Why Would a Film Photographer Shoot Color? "I would say, if you're going to shoot film at all, shoot black-and-white film and embrace the process," he writes.
  • In GFX 100 II, X2D Auto-Focusing With Dark EVFs, Jim Kasson tests the effect of finder brightness on autofocus and finds it "makes a big difference with the X2D."
  • Michael Schaffer interviews Politico photographer Francis Chung on capturing Josh Hawley's Jan. 6 Fist Pump. "I'm a person of color and I'm a journalist, amongst people who sometimes aren't the biggest fans of those things," he says. "And the thought crossed my mind that I could suffer physical violence. The thought crossed my mind that Covid was a risk."

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
