In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Close-Up Photographer of the Year winners, five who photographed Kate Moss, Doug Menuez, Lucien Migné, lens mount charts, continuous lights and a compact $149 light box.

  • Winners of the Close-Up Photographer of the Year contest featuring "best 100 close-up, macro photography and photomicrography pictures of 2023" have been announced. Submissions reached almost 12,000 pictures sent in from 67 countries.
  • Alex Needham interviews five photographers who relive their shoots with Kate Moss, who is turning 50 this year. Nick Knight, David Dawson, Richard Young, Kate Garner and Johnnie Shand Kydd all applaud her intelligent contributions to the classic images they captured.
  • Suzanne Sease presemts Because of You, I Am, the personal project of Doug Menuez. The project tells the stories of P.J. and Roy Hirabayashi, two Japanese-American artists who found the taiko drum as their identity and voice 50 years ago.
  • In Danger and Dignity, Chloé Farand features the images of people engaged in "vanishing trades" captured by Lucien Migné. "I love to show that beyond the daily hardship, there are family lives and strong social ties," says Migné. "In the west, as people increasingly work online, these strong bonds which for centuries have underpinned people's working lives are being eroded."
  • Thom Hogan has updated his Available Lens Mount Charts showing zooms in one and primes in the other for Canon, L-Mount, Z-Mount and Sony offerings.
  • Can Continuous Lights Replace Studio Strobes? Zach Suttong wonders. "Continuous lighting can be incredibly useful and with the right power, can replace a lot of work done with strobes effortlessly," he concludes.
  • Feroz Khan reviews the Negative Supply Light Source Mini 97 Cri. He used the compact $149 light box with the $300 Pro Film Carrier to scan negatives with his camera.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
