19 January 2024

We were leaving Mom's house Wednesday after winding the clock and paying the bills when we noticed the first white rose of the year blooming in the front yard. We wouldn't be back for days, so we took out our pen knife and clipped it to take home.

It's a John F. Kennedy hybrid tea rose. We like this description of it we found at Gardenia:

As popular today as ever, Rosa 'John F. Kennedy' is an exquisite Hybrid Tea rose boasting very large, 5.5 in. across, very full (48 petals), high-centered, glistening white flowers. The blossoms have a moderate fragrance and bloom in flushes from spring to early fall. The luminous flowers stand out against the lush foliage of leathery, medium green leaves. A strong, classy and handsome shrub rose that is very disease resistant and has withstood the test of time. Perfect for beds, borders or as a flowering hedge. A great rose for cutting too.

When it was in full bloom last year, we would bring one to Mom at the skilled nursing facility every few days. And when the bush was full, we'd bring one to each of her roommates, too.

We told them the white rose with red speckles was named after the assassinated president. Which only made it more beautiful.

So we found ourselves with a delicate first flowering (months early) just when you prune rose bushes back. And with a new iPhone 15 Pro Max (with Portrait mode).

Naturally, we took a few photos.

We are, sadly, occupied with the dissolution of Mom's property so we can't expect to enjoy this year's blooms very long. This, perhaps, is the last one.

But even in sadness, you should never let a chance to appreciate the beauty in this world pass. It goes soon enough all by itself.
