Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 536th in our series of Saturday matinees today: Jake Ricker.

In this 2:51 piece for KPIX reporter Itay Hod catches up with freelance photographer Jake Ricker whose special project for the last six years has been street photography on the Golden Gate Bridge.

The former Seattle bike messenger stepped onto the bridge in Nov. 2017 and has been returning nearly every day since. Missing only about 20 days over the last four years, he's amassed a collection of over 100,000 photos.

Which is even more impressive when you realize they have all been shot on film with his Leica rangefinder. And consequently remain unprocessed because, well, there's not enough money to develop all that film.

The video shows him using a Leica M2 with a Summicron 35mm prime and what looks like a zoom or two as well as he walks along the eastern side of the bridge among the pedestrian traffic.

He spends up to 10 hours a day there, looking for that "one second" that is "way more magical than anything that can be captured in a studio."

You can see what he captured on his site where he also has a store. At the store, you can also make a $10 donation to the Bridge project.
