In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the week in pictures, the Nature Photography Contest, Marcio Pimenta, Ernest Scheidegger, Ernest Cole, Andalusia, Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max, a color negative scan and Z-mount filter sizes.
- The Associated Press presents its Week in Pictures for last week including the 75th Emmy Awards, Ecuadorian soldiers hunting for an escaped gang leader, Denmark celebrating King Frederik and North Korean officials exercising in the snow.
- The Nature Photography Contest has announced its winners. Glenn Ostle won Photography of the Year for Sea Lion in Los Isolotes. The Photographer of the Year award went to Alain Schroeder "for his powerful and engaging images." There are 10 category winners as well.
- In Finding Darwin, Brazilian photographer Marcio Pimenta looks for traces of Charles Darwin in Patagonia. "The focus of this project extends beyond Charles Darwin's scientific legacy, delving into his personal growth and self-discovery throughout this journey," he says.
- Tim Adams featurs Ernest Scheidegger's photo of Back-Bending Ballerinas from 1955. "s part of the celebrations in Switzerland to mark the centenary of Scheidegger's birth, an exhibition -- Eye to Eye -- presents some of this archived work from the 1950s beside the celebrated later portraits of artists," he writes.
- Grace Ebert reviews South African photographer Ernest Cole's photographs of Black Life in America, collected in a new book from Aperture titled The True America.
- Lara Carretero asks why a government-sponsored photography project to highlight the Andalusian Region in Spain selected 10 photographers who were not from the area. "What I -- and a whole community of photographers born or living in Andalusia -- disagree with, is the fact that these photographers are being brought here on a giant amount of taxpayer money that could be used to revitalize the local talent pool," she writes.
- Kevin Raber runs some tests on Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max Raw File Sizes.
- Kirk Tuck continues having Fun With Medium Format Film Scans, this time with Fujifilm's Reala, a color negative film. "You don't need a stand alone app or an Adobe plug-in to invert and color correct your images," he writes, suggesting you use the eyedropper to set black from the border of the frame.
- Thom Hogan answers, Is the Dog Chasing Its Tail? with a discussion of "just how disconnected Tokyo camera design is." Meanwhile he presents a handy list of Filter Sizes for Z-mount lenses.
