In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at ice huts, Raúl Cañibano, Kenneth P. Green Sr., flash gear, a flash ebook, Mirrorless Mover bags, a sports photography contest and an energized Johnston.

  • Kate Mothes features the late Toronto-based architectural photographer Richard Johnson's Ice Huts. Johnson photographed hundreds of the small buildings between 2007 and 2019 using a square aspect ratio.
  • In Dive Into the Surreal, Mee-Lai Stone presents black-and-white photographs on exhibit in Raúl Cañibano: Human Landscapes at The Photographers' Gallery until April 7. Born in Havana in 1961 and raised in post-revolutionary Cuba, Cañibano was initially a welder by trade until his photographic journey began in 1984.
  • Toward a Black Aesthetic exhibits Kenneth P. Green Sr.'s images of "Black women, whose strength, intellect and beauty he recognized and paid homage to through his photographs, which also highlight the fashion and politics of the 1960s and '70s." Green (1968-1982) was the first Black staff photographer for the Oakland Tribune. The exhibit runs through April 21 at the Main Library in San Francisco.
  • Kirk Tuck details What I'm Using for Flash Photography. "I am using portable, lightweight, battery powered flashes," he writes. "And none of the lights I now use cost more than about $250."
  • Rocky Nook has published Picture Perfect Flash by Roberto Valenzuela, which "dives into everything you need to know to conquer portable strobes and hot shoe flash to create extraordinary portraits." Use the code PPF40 at checkout for a 40 percent discount on the ebook.
  • Think Tank has updated its Mirrorless Mover shoulder bags with four new colors, a larger front pocket with more organization and more adjustable dividers.
  • KEH is accepting submissions for its Sports MVP (Most Valuable Photo) Award. Prizes include KEH gift cards from $500 to $100. Deadline is Feb. 9.
  • Mike Johnston feels like the Energized Bunny after his pacemaker implant. "It's supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," he writes before confessing to conducting a "Mary Poppins experiment" as a child by jumping off a shed with an umbrella.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
