In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at AP's week in pictures, a Steve Boyle composite, Azim Khan Ronnie, collective nouns for photographers and Willie Mays Day.
- The Associated Press showcases the Week in Pictures from across the globe. "Venice celebrates the opening of Carnival season and the world's largest cruise ship departs Port Miami on its first public cruise. Regions of Spain are hit by a drought. People around the world support Palestinians, while both sides in the Israel-Hamas war bury their dead. Artifacts illegally taken away from Nepal return home and roses are ready for Valentine's Day."
- Mike Johnston points out a Steve Boyle Composite could not have been made before the digital era. A reader responded to his observation that Ansel Adams never took images of wildlife by pointing out "Ansel Adams wasn't really equipped for wildlife and bird photography." Which leads Johnston to suggest "it would be an interesting organizing principle for a book or show to collect together examples of pictures that couldn't have been taken or made (or couldn't have been taken or made easily) before the era of digital imaging."
- Grace Holiday features Azim Khan Ronnie's 2020 shot of Thousands of Muslims gathered for Friday prayers, "bringing buses and lorries to a grinding halt." Ronnie captured the scene with his Huawei P30 Pro. "I hope this image surprises people," he says. "It's a very rare scenario. The vehicles' engines were turned off; there were no horns or intrusions. This photograph makes me feel a great sense of peace."
- A Reddit poster is looking for Collective Nouns for Photographers and gets some amusing suggestion. Like "a clique."
- Julie Zigoris reports Willie Mays Finally Gets His Own Holiday with 24 deals (24 was his number) across the city tomorrow on Feb. 4 (2/4/24). You can share photos using the hashtag #WillieMaysDay and #SayHey24.
